Whooping Cough Outbreak Auckland Region

Since 1 January 2012 there have been 322 cases of pertussis notified and over 1,500 contacts requiring follow up. Of concern, two recent cases have been health care workers attached to maternity services.

Between January 1 and mid-May 2012 46 babies have been admitted to hospital with whooping cough in the Auckland region. The risk for babies hospitalised with pertussis is one in 10 will need admission to intensive care and of those admitted to intensive care one in six babies will be left with permanent brain or lung damage or will die.
