H3N2 Influenza Flu Epidemic 2012 New Zealand

There has been an epidemic of H3N2 strain of influenza at Christchurch. 60 people have been hospitalised and 12 are critically ill. It is predicted this will move up north quickly and is going to be worse than the swine flu epidemic.

Diabetes Test HbA1c Reporting Change
There is a reporting change of HbA1c from the 3 August 2011. This change is to standardise this for all the labs in the world. It is worthwhile to go through the below numbers and familiarise with the the new equivalent numbers.

Warfarin substitute Dabigatran - Pradaxa

What is Dabigatran / Pradaxa?
Dabigatran (Pradaxa) is a blood thinner similar to Warfarin licensed to be used in New Zealand since the 1 July 2011.
Is Dabigatran (Pradaxa) right for you?
- If you have Atrial Fibrillation and has been advised to go on warfarin, but you are not on it
- If you are already on Warfarin for your Atrial Fibrillation but having trouble managing the blood tests for INR or not achieving adequate blood INR control or if you wish to change for convenience.
- Short term treatment preventing clots after major orthopaedic surgery like total knee or hip joint replacement.
When is Dabigatran (Pradaxa) NOT right for you and you should stay on the Warfarin?
- If you have mechanical heart valve replacement.
- Long term treatment for deep venous thrombosis (DVT - leg blood clots) and pulmonary embolism (PE - lung blood clots)
- If you kidneys are not working very well

There have been about 40 cases of measles in Auckland. If you have young children please check if they need any additional immunisation and other protective steps you can take to prevent measles. The 4 year old MMR can be given early, ask your nurse.

Eastmed complex has well over 70 car parks. Please note if you’re a a Grace Joel Rest Home Visitor park your car on allocated rest home car parks. Time restrictions will soon apply for car parks and will be policed more. Sorry for the inconvenience of not able to find a car park during busy hours.
Please give plenty of time to arrive so you are not in a rush to find a park and can park on site or on the side roads. Walking to the clinic, taking a bus or asking your friend or family to transport you are some of the ways to avoid bringing your car.
